Bathing rituals of one sort or another have been in use for ages. The combination of warm water, minerals and botanicals is literally as old as the hills. While our forebears may not have understood why, they certainly could recognize the health benefits that went along with soaking in certain types of baths. Today we have more and more science that’s backing up what history already knew – these bathing rituals are good for more than just your soul.

Let’s take a look at just a few of the botanicals that are often used in modern spa baths. Probably the most common is lavender either in flower form or as an essential oil. It smells wonderful but that’s just the beginning. Lavender has been shown to promote relaxation and provide better sleep. It also works even deeper to relieve physical tension in your muscles making them less sore and achy.

Rose petals are another staple of the botanical pharmacopeia, and with very good reason. Rose petals and rose oil contain an array of vitamins and minerals as well as antioxidants. They are best known for their moisturizing properties but they also contain antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties as well. Their scent is also known to lower the concentration the stress hormone cortisol in the body. This makes them a natural mood booster.

Hibiscus flowers are used in teas by cultures all over the world, but these antioxidant-rich flowers are fantastic for soaking too. Hibiscus is often called the botox plant because of what it can do for your skin. It helps to even out skin tone and increases the elasticity of your skin. It aturally combats the aging process by helping to firm and lift your skin.
