Sugar Can Be Good For You…Really!Posted on
Remember all those times your mom warned you about the horrible effects of sugar, everything from rotten teeth to acne? And remember all of those articles you’ve read that prove sugar can be a huge contributor to poor health, almost poisonous in its effects on your body? Well, it turns out that there is something that sugar can do to improve your health after all, and it’s about to become your new BFF in skincare.
When used as a component of topical skincare treatments, sugar actually has some great benefits. First of all, sugar is typically used as an ingredient in scrubs. Its granular texture makes it perfect for exfoliating dead or dry skin cells that are lingering on the surface. Sugar crystals tend to be smaller than salt crystals giving you a more gentle scrubbing action that’s less likely to tear at your skin.
The next great thing is that sugar is a natural humectant, meaning that it attracts moisture from the surrounding air. You know how sometimes your sugar bowl becomes one giant lump? That’s because all of that sugar has drawn in enough moisture that the sugar crystals are sticking to each other. When sugar is used in skincare treatments, it means that it’s attracting that moisture straight to your skin instead.
Finally, sugar is loaded with glycolic acid, which is often used to treat sun-damaged or aging skin. It penetrates the skin and helps to break down the bonds between skin cells, and that makes them want to produce fresh, new cells as replacements. But those new skin cells will want protecting. So you’ll need to be especially vigilant about using sunscreen after a sugar scrub treatment to keep those new skin cells looking their best.
