The Why’s & How’s of WaxingPosted on
Humans have been removing their unwanted hair for centuries. Ancient Egyptian women removed virtually all of their body hair, even that on their heads, with either tweezers, pumice stones or an early version of waxing. In ancient Rome, a lack of body hair was a status symbol, and wealthy men and women used razors made of flint as well as the Egyptian tweezing and pumice stone routines. When you think about it, our modern waxing treatments are downright mild in comparison.
Waxing is a quick and relatively easy way to get smooth skin that lasts far longer than shaving. Regrowth from shaving can pop up in less than a day, but hair that’s been waxed usually needs anywhere from two to six weeks to regrow. That’s because shaving removes the hair just at the surface while waxing removes the entire hair, bulb and all, from below as well as above the surface of your skin.
The process of waxing also acts as an exfoliator. Stripping away the wax not only removes the hair but also the uppermost layer of dead skin cells. Shaving doesn’t remove this layer of cells, and that means your hair can more easily become ingrown. To get the best benefit from the waxing-as-exfoliator process, you should indulge in a manual exfoliation a day or two before your waxing appointment, and again a week or so later.
When the hair you’ve waxed does begin to regrow, it will likely be finer and softer than it was before. This is especially true if you stick to a waxing regimen over time. The hair follicles will weaken and in some cases may cease regrowing all together.
Professional waxing treatments are really the way to go. Aestheticians are licensed, meaning they have specialized training in health and safety standards as well as up-to-date techniques that will minimize discomfort. The waxing products used in salons are usually of a much higher quality than what you can get at home, and the after-care products will keep your newly smooth skin looking and feeling its best.
